WPI Plans for Fall Opening Latest Information

Homecoming 2020

Monday, September 21, 2020 to Saturday, September 26, 2020

Each fall we look forward to welcoming alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and students to campus for our annual Homecoming celebration. It is truly one of the best weekends of the year, where our alumni and campus community come together to show their love for WPI and each other. But this year, since we can't be together, we're bringing the Hill to your home, wherever you may be, for our first-ever global Homecoming.

From September 21 through 26, we're offering a slate of virtual events and digital content for alumni of all generations, as well as activities that families and kids can participate in, so you can reconnect and share your WPI Pride from wherever you are. Check out the week's schedule, and then join us for a series of virtual events that will give you opportunities to learn, play, socialize, and get moving. During Homecoming week, we will also offer a number of digital engagement opportunities, including photo challenges, on-demand videos, and more.

Visit the Homecoming website for more information and to register online. Online registration for Homecoming events opens Wednesday, August 12.

    Homecoming Virtual 5K

Love to run? Bike? Kayak? Join your WPI herd for a Virtual 5K during Homecoming 2020! This virtual “race” can be done anywhere and in any way you choose. After your 5K, share your route and photos on social so we can congratulate you! You can add your photo to our Padlet album (no account needed), post it on social tagging @WPI and @WPI Alumni and using #WPIHomecoming, or email it to us at alumni-office@wpi.edu

    How to Participate:

    • Register for the 5K online – you will receive a race bib once you have registered!
    • Choose your mode and route. You may already have a favorite place or route, but here are a few options just in case you don’t:
      • Look for an established route - public parks or bike paths often have routes with pre-marked distances
      • Run around an athletic track - 12.5 laps on a 400m track are the equivalent of a 5K
      • Use a route mapping website like Map My Run, USATF - America's Running Routes, or WalkJogRun
    • Complete your 5K during Homecoming week - September 21 through 26 - and pat yourself on the back!
    • Upload your 5K pictures to social media using #WPIHomecoming (don't forget to make your post public so we can see it!) or email them to us at alumni-office@wpi.edu.

    More about the Featured Brews

Citra - Imperial Belgian IPA (9% ABV) This is an Imperial IPA recipe, but with a Belgian yeast in place of our house strain. You get notes of dried fruits (as you'd expect from a Belgian yeast), but with a juicy, full mouthfeel. A seasonal fan favorite, Citra only makes a few appearances a year.

Good Night Moon - Chocolate Milk Porter (11% ABV) Good Night Moon is a bold porter featuring cocoa nibs and milk sugar. We use an abundance of coffee and chocolate malts for a warm, roasty notes to balance out the caramel flavors typically seen in porters. The already creamy mouthfeel is intensified when drinking the Good Nitro Moon, found on tap in our brewery and in the nitrogen-dosed cans.

Deepah Shade of Soul - Galaxy New England IPA (6% ABV) Deepah Shade of Soul is one of our better known brands from our "sister" brewery, Soul Purpose. This is a New England IPA that features a large dry hop of Galaxy hops, an Australian variety known for its notes of citrus, peach, and passion fruit. With very low bitterness, you can expect the tropical fruit flavors to pop.

Pulp Daddy - New England IPA (8% ABV) Pulp Daddy is our flagship IPA that won most tasty IPA in Massachusetts in the Mass Brew Brothers' blind taste test in 2019, beating out well known breweries such as Tree House and Trillium. This is a juicy, hazy IPA with strong citrus flavors, minimal bitterness, and a nose of fresh squeezed orange juice.

Goat's Head Award Presentation to Janet Begin Richardson

The Alumni Association’s Goat’s Head Award for Lifetime Commitment to WPI was created in 2010 to acknowledge an individual’s lifetime contributions to the WPI community at large, and reflects the friendship, support, and overall responsiveness to needs and interests that individual provided to students, parents, alumni, faculty, and staff over the years.

This special award is only presented occasionally and in 2020 will be presented to Janet Begin Richardson. All members of the WPI community are invited to join the Alumni Association Board of Directors and a panel of special guests as Richardson is recognized with this honor during Homecoming.

Richardson is WPI’s former vice president for student affairs and campus life. She joined WPI in 1980 as assistant dean of students and served as dean of students and associate vice president for student affairs before becoming WPI's first female vice president in 2004. A collegial leader and consensus builder with a drive for excellence, she is recognized for being an advocate for diversity on campus and a champion for women students. Among her many contributions to WPI, Richardson played pivotal roles in the development of several building projects at WPI, including Rubin Campus Center (2001), which she famously referred to as "WPI's living room." Her visionary leadership also extended beyond the campus to the many the local organizations and boards on which she has served. Richardson retired from WPI in the fall of 2012 after over 30 years of service to the college.
