Laboratory Safety Training - EHS

Course Description:

Laboratory Safety Training is a 2-hour session presented by Environmental Health & Safety and covers key elements of the University’s Chemical Hygiene Plan and laboratory safety including, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • Introduction to the Chemical Hygiene Plan
  • Hazard Communication
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
  • Reactive Chemicals
  • General Storage Guidelines
  • General Guidelines for Working With Chemicals
  • Compressed Gas Cylinder Safety
  • Electrical Safety
  • Introduction to First Aid
  • Fire Safety
  • Accident and Injury Reporting
  • Emergency Procedures

Who Should Attend?
All faculty, staff and students working in research laboratories should attend training.  This includes, but is not limited to, faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, staff, and visitors.

When Should Initial Training be Completed?
Initial Laboratory Safety Training is required within 30 days of initial assignment to a laboratory.  During that 30 day period an individual may work in a laboratory (without having first attended the training) provided that;

  1. They are approved for work by the Laboratory Supervisor,
  2. Supervised at all times,
  3. And have read the WPI Chemical Hygiene Plan & Laboratory Safety Manual in its entirety.

How Often Should I Attend a Refresher Course?
Laboratory Safety Training is required every year, as duties change, or as recommended by Environmental Health & Safety.  Annual refresher training can be achieved by attending remote training hosted on Zoom.
