Dr. Brown's presentation, “Black Migration in the Political Spotlight: Narratives of Blame and Agency” will examine how Black migrants are framed in political debates during elections, focusing on their racialization within migration narratives and their portrayal as scapegoats for economic and social issues. Using examples from U.S. electoral campaigns, it explores how these narratives influence public perceptions and voter behavior, often deepening divisions within urban communities. The presentation also highlights the contributions of Black migrants to reshaping cities and their potential for political agency, challenging stereotypes and fostering solidarity with other Black Americans. By analyzing the intersection of race, migration, and electoral politics, this study provides insights into the broader implications of these narratives for governance and immigrant inclusion.

Please join us for an engaging discussion in the Chair's Conference Room on Thursday, December 12th from 12pm-1pm as Dr. Brown will present to WPI faculty and staff.
