Teaching: Calculus of variations and its modern applications
Abstract: Many physical phenomena can be explained by variational principles. What does this mean and how does this work? In this lecture, I will answer these questions through some examples. While some problems can be solved by routine method, we will soon realize the limitations of these routines. These limitations motivate deeper understanding of the theories and new ideas that are fundamental in modern applications of calculus of variations. I will discuss the above points through plenty of examples, and will also touch some modern applications to material structures.
