Unique Opportunities and Challenges in Additive Manufacturing

There is growing interest in using additive manufacturing (AM) for various alloy systems and industrial applications. This is due to the layer-wise build nature of AM which makes it extremely favorable for producing parts which are lightweight and have complex geometries. The resulting design flexibility makes AM particularly attractive to aerospace, biomedical, automobile, and energy industries and offers tremendous opportunities to explore new applications and advance the state-of-the-art in various industries. At the same time, there are also challenges to be addressed to realize the full potential of AM. Some of these challenges are related to process development, qualification, and cost. In this talk, both opportunities and challenges are discussed with emphasis on the metal additive manufacturing processes that have garnered great interest in both industry and academia in the recent times. We will discuss our previous and ongoing efforts toward addressing these challenges along with discussing our approach to exploiting the opportunities offered by AM.
As an active researcher in the field of Additive Manufacturing (AM), Sneha Prabha Narra explores novel applications in AM by utilizing interdisciplinary knowledge from mechanical engineering, materials science, and data analytics, with a particular focus on alloys. Her research investigates microstructure and porosity control in alloys using AM processes, additive manufacturing of non-standard materials and powders, and how data analytics and physics-based knowledge of a process can be combined to reduce the need for experimentation in engineering problems. Prior to her appointment as an Assistant Professor at WPI, Sneha worked as a postdoctoral researcher for the NextManufacturing (NextM) center at Carnegie Mellon University. Sneha also led a newly introduced Additive Manufacturing Lab course at CMU for advanced undergraduate and graduate level students. Sneha received her B.E in Civil Engineering from Osmania University (India), M.S in Computational Mechanics, and M.S and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
