When greenhouse gases are mentioned, carbon dioxide comes immediately to mind, but a given amount of methane (natural gas) has about 30 times the global warming potential of the same amount of CO2.  Hence, methane leaks from any source are a major concern environmentally, as well as for safety reasons.  Dr. Phillips’ research in ecology and climate change led him to begin an in-depth study of methane leaks from our gas transmission infrastructure in Boston and other cities.   He will share the results of this work, discuss the initiatives to address the problem, and relate this to the overall greenhouse gas and climate change picture.
