Great Minds, Brave Spaces:
Caring for Trans Kids and the Double-Edged Sword of Visibility
June 16, 2021
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM EDT
Jules Gill-Peterson is Associate Professor of English and Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. Jules is the author of Histories of the Transgender Child, the first book to shatter the myth that transgender children are a brand new generation in the twenty-first century and show how the concept of gender actually relies on the medicalization of children, challenging the terms of how we talk about today's medical model. The importance of research and histories that complicate the visibility of trans communities, especially trans kids, is at the center of her career.
Republican lawmakers are pushing a historic flood of over 100 anti-trans bills in state legislatures this year, with the perception that trans kids are a “new phenomenon” and that gender-affirming treatments and policies are “experimental.” In this GMBS, Jules Gill-Peterson unpacks this narrative, the history, and their implications for all of us.
