Quantum surface codes
\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\nTuesday, April 28th, 2026\n1:00pm – 1:50pm\nS
 tratton Hall 301\n\nSpeaker:Bill Martin, WPI\nTitle:Quantum surface codes\
nAbstract: This talk will be a continuation of last week’s seminar on qu
antum stabilizer codes. Our focus will be on surface codes, their performa
nce and parameters. These were introduced by Alexei Kitaev in 1997 and hav
e become a dominant choice for quantum error correction and fault-tolerant
quantum computing. For example, Google made international headlines in 20
24 by successfully implementing a 49-qubit (toroidal) surface code on its
 105-qubit Willow machine.\n
