Giving FAQs

The following provides some general information about giving to WPI. If you have additional questions, please contact us at +1-508-831-6052 or toll free at +1-877-WPI-FUND (+1-877-974-3863).

If students pay tuition to attend WPI, why does the university need donations?
Tuition only covers approximately 65 percent of a student’s education at WPI, and delivering high quality engineering and science higher education is an expensive endeavor. In addition, approximately 90 percent of our students qualify for some form of financial assistance. Contributions from our alumni and friends are critical to WPI’s ability to continue to deliver the highest quality engineering and science education to a diverse cohort of talented and ambitious students, who are taught by the finest faculty in a state-of-the-art learning and living environment.

Can I make my gift online?
Yes, you can make your gift using our secure online form . You can also make your gift by calling +1-877-WPI-FUND (+1-877-974-3863), or through the mail. You may send your check, payable to WPI, to:

Does my gift need to be cash?
You are welcome to make a gift of cash to WPI, but your donation may take other forms as well. There are many types of assets that can be donated to the university and many different ways to make those gifts (outright, deferred, endowed, etc.). Visit our Ways to Give page for more information.

When is the best time to make my gift?
This depends on your philanthropic goals. WPI’s fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30. If you make your gift between those months, your contribution will count toward that fiscal year’s fundraising goal. To take advantage of tax benefits, your gift must be made by the end of the calendar year; the deadline varies depending on what day of the week upon which Dec. 31 falls each year. Please consult a financial advisor if you are considering the tax advantages of making a gift to WPI.

How much of my gift is tax deductible?
That depends on the nature of your gift. Most gifts are at least partially deductible. If you receive any goods or services in return for your gift, such as auction items or tickets, the fair-market value of those items is not tax deductible.

How do I take advantage of my company’s matching gift program?
Use this searchable matching gift database to find out if your employer has a matching gift program. If so, simply request a matching gift form from your human resources department or download it from your company Web site. Send it completed and signed with your gift to WPI. Some companies even match gifts made by retirees or directors.

Are there any giving challenges that could enhance my gift?
Yes. Currently, WPI has two giving challenges underway:

The Dollan Challenge
If you graduated in the last 10 years, WPI Trustee Mike Dolan ’75 will match your gift dollar for dollar.

Faculty and Staff Giving: Faculty and staff can support WPI by giving to financial aid, fund IQP and MQP projects, and areas of most need. Faculty and staff can also designate their gift to areas they most support. Learn more...

Can I make my gift in installments?

If I am a faculty or staff member, can I make my gift through payroll deduction?
Yes. This is a simple way to make your gift. Just use this pledge form and send the signed form to the Office of Annual Giving at 85 Prescott St.

Where does my donation go?
Unrestricted gifts to WPI make an immediate impact and give WPI the financial flexibility to pursue academic entrepreneurship and innovation and to take advantage of unexpected opportunities. You may also designate your gift to certain university priorities or areas of your interest. You may want to use this form to explore where your interests and philanthropic goals align with WPI’s priorities and initiatives.

I can’t make a large donation to WPI. Does my gift even make a difference?
Most definitely yes! Every gift to WPI, no matter the size, supports our students and advances the work of our faculty. Giving at every level, and specifically alumni participation in giving, also impacts WPI’s reputation and its ability to garner support from other funding sources. Alumni participation, in particular, is one factor used in national rankings such as US News & World Report. Many foundations and other organizations also consider alumni giving in the awarding of grants.

How do I make an endowed gift to WPI?
The minimum level of an endowed gift ranges from $50,000 for a Project Center to $25 million for an academic department, with many options in between. If you are interested in making an endowment gift, please contact Lisa Maizite, assistant vice president for development, at +1-508-831-5073 or

More information about making an endowment gift is also available on our Major Gifts page.

I received a solicitation letter. How do I know that it is from WPI?
All mailed requests for financial support of WPI must have the University’s official mailing address of 100 Institute Road, Worcester, MA, in the return address field and must include the address to which mailed gifts should be directed. Fundraising requests from WPI always provide a department title and a WPI telephone extension, which may be called to verify the request.
