It was difficult for me make a decision to a new PhD program since I already have my PhD degree from the Southeast University. I have published about ten papers in my research eld and been awarded many scholarship such as National Scholarship for Phd students in China. However, I always feel that numerical analysis I have done is a bit away from real world applications. To explore what people are doing in other parts of the world, during my first Phd program period, I applied another national wide scholarship for PhD to support myself to visit renowned universities. With this scholarship, I have visited Purdue University for one year and WPI for nine months. During the visits, I heard the buzz words big data, machine learning. It seemed to me that the most important methods are statistical ones. However, the talks at ICERM totally changed my mind. Several classical methods from classical computational and applied mathematics have been successfully applied to big data problems. For example, Professor Weinan E has applied methods for stochastic differential equations to machine learning problems. I then realized that solving big data problems would be the future of computational and applied mathematics.
I was then further determined to pursue a PhD study in such a direction where I can apply what I learned in the graduate school of Southeast University and more knowledge to solve data related problems. I feel that expertise in my eld is far from enough to my goal. When I talked about my idea with Professor Zhang, he fully understood me and supported me. Moreover, he has an opening research assistant position in this research direction. So I told him that I would like to take this position and work with him to achieve our goal.
