He teaches courses in Data Science, Computer Science, and Electrical and Computer Engineering. In his primary affiliations, he is Associate Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School, Director of the Intelligent Medical Imaging research group at the Computational Radiology Laboratory, and the Director of Translational Research in the Radiology Department at Boston Children’s Hospital. He received all his degrees in Electrical Engineering (PhD’08 at the Univ. of Texas at Dallas, and MS’03, BS’01 at the Univ. of Tehran) and is a Senior Member of IEEE, as well as a member of the editorial boards of Medical Image Analysis and IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging. He has served as a reviewer for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), UK Medical Research Council (MRC), UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (ESPRC), Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), and Austrian Research Fund (FWF), and has served as a committee member and reviewer for several international meetings and workshops, including Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention (MICCAI), and IEEE Symposium on Biomedical Imaging.

Dr. Gholipour's research interests lie in the broad areas of machine learning, signals and systems, and intelligent systems. His current research is focused on machine learning in medical imaging. Specifically, his research is focused on the development of new imaging technologies and methods to study early human brain development. He has developed new techniques and tools for fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); super-resolution image reconstruction; motion-robust diffusion-weighted MRI; functional MRI; brain functional localization; artifact reduction in MRI; image registration, segmentation, and analysis; and atlas construction. Dr. Gholipour has been principal investigator of grants funded by the National Institutes of Health, and awards from the Thrasher Research Fund, the Harvard Clinical and Translational Science Center, the McKnight Foundation, the Fetal Health Foundation, and the Office of Faculty Development at Boston Children's Hospital.
