Location and Culture:
The small city of Mandi, India is a community of 60,000 located in the northwestern foothills of the Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh. The area surrounding the Indian Institute of Technology: Mandi balances wildlife with facilities, providing access to hiking, bird-watching, and plenty of outdoor recreation. Average temperatures in April range from 51°F to 82°F.
Housing and Meals:
WPI students will live in 2- to 3-bedroom residence-style accommodations at IIT, a 40-minute bus ride from Mandi. Students will have access to campus amenities like the dining hall, library, and recreation center. Accommodation type and location are subject to change without notice and will be confirmed the term prior to departure.
Indian cuisine varies greatly by region, but usually involves lots of spice. Common staples in Himachal Pradesh include lentils, broth, rice, vegetables, and bread. Students should inform their advisor of any health concerns, dietary restrictions, or allergies in advance of participation in this program.
Past students at the Mandi, India Project Center have:
- Proposed safer traffic patterns to alleviate traffic congestion in Mandi
- Designed a mechanical harvester and made other suggestions and innovations to benefit small-scale tea production
- Explored and implemented alternative day lighting technologies for village homes in Mandi
