Location and Culture:
The small city of Mandi, India is a community of 60,000 located in the northwestern foothills of the Himalaya in Himachal Pradesh. Outside the center, in a quiet valley, the IIT-Mandi is one of the newest additions to the Indian Institute of Technology, known as a premier Institution of National Importance in India. It is the only IIT in the Himalayas, set on a 500-acre campus with views of the foothills. The immediate area balances wildlife with facilities, providing access to hiking, bird watching, and plenty of outdoor recreation. WPI students are hosted on campus, live in dorms, have the opportunity to join the campus meal plan, and enjoy use of all of the facilities.
Past students at the Mandi, India Project Center have:
- Proposed safer traffic patterns to alleviate traffic congestion in Mandi (Winner of the 2014 President's IQP Award!)
- Designed a mechanical harvester, as well as making other suggestions and innovations, to benefit small-scale tea production
- Explored and implemented alternative day lighting technologies for village homes in Mandi
