Career Options

You have several different options when it comes to the kinds of jobs you may be offered after graduation. From regular full-time positions to fellowships—the Career Development Center (CDC) has put together brief descriptions of these options to help you decide which is best for you.

Part-Time Paid Positions

  • Usually less than 30 hours/week
  • Typically paid hourly, but may be salaried
  • May be temporary or “permanent”
  • May not include benefits

Full-Time Paid Positions

  • 30+ hours/week with no defined end date
  • May be salaried or hourly
  • Typically include benefits

Contract Paid Positions (temporary)

  • Include defined start and end date
  • Work on-site or remotely
  • Employed by an agency or third party, but perform work for another company
  • Potential pathway to regular, full-time employment within a company

Research Paid Positions

  • May be salaried, hourly, or stipend
  • Usually take place in a university or lab setting
  • Available at any degree level, but postdocs are only for those with a PhD

Fellowship Positions

  • Short-term, research-focused opportunities sponsored by specific associations or organizations
  • Can last from a few months to a few years
  • May be specific to a particular institution, or utilized at any institution
