Athletes of the Week: Varsity Eight (Rowing Team) & Katie Nugent

• The varsity eight of the Rowing Team has been named as the WPI Male Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, April 3.   The boating of coxswain Kelsey Regan (Winchendon, Mass.), Michael Beinor (Sutton, Mass.), Nick Cebry (Bedford, Mass.), Michael Eaton (Exeter, N.H.), Jeremy Hemingway (Westford, Mass.), Danny Singer (Eldersburg, M.D.), Dean Schifilliti (Ossining, N.Y.), Nathan Pietrowicz (Worcester, Mass.) and Jackson Krupnick (Ashville, N.C.) reached the finish line in 6:09.0 to win the Class of 2003 Cup on Saturday on Lake Quinsigamond.  The Engineers finished  2.5 seconds ahead of second place Wesleyan, 7.5 seconds better than UMass and nearly 20 seconds ahead of Colby.

KATIE NUGENT – TRACK AND FIELD

Katie Nugent of the Track and Field team has been tabbed as the WPI Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, April 3.  The freshman from Huntington, N.Y. made her collegiate track and field debut a memorable one by claiming a victory in the 400-meter dash (1:00.33) and teaming with Lea Strangio, Julie Tevenan, and Maggie LaRoche to win the 4×400-meter relay (4:08.45) as the Engineers captured the team championship at the Coast Guard Invitational on Saturday afternoon.  Katie’s performance in the 400 meters qualifies her for the New England Division III Championships in early May.
