Research

Literary translation of contemporary German authors, and German literature and culture of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries are my primary areas of scholarly interest. I have published translations of works by Bertolt Brecht, Michael Kleeberg, Anna Mitgutsch, Perikles Monioudis, and Moses Rosenkranz and written critical books and articles on the writers Alfred Döblin, Christa Wolf, Ingeborg Bachmann, Joseph Roth, Kay Boyle, and Eugene Jolas.

Another area of interest is teaching German as a second language. With Professor Thomas Hansen of Wellesley College I am the author of the textbook Neue Horizonte, now in its seventh edition. With Professor Susanne Even of Indiana University I am working on a bilingual novel for university-level readers.
