Scholarly Communication & Author Rights
Prior to publication, when you submit a publishers agreement for your own articles and books, consider adding an authors’ addendum in order to retain rights to:
- use your own works for a course pack or use within myWPI
- store a copy on your professional page on the WPI web site or within an online repository
- distribute print and electronic copies to colleagues
An author’s addendum will allow you transfer only some of your rights to the publisher. Kenneth Crews at the Copyright Management Center, Indiana University, Purdue University, Indianapolis has created a useful guide to Reserving Rights in Works Submitted for Publication: Negotiating Publishing Agreements
- Addendum A: lists specific rights retained by the author
- Addendum B: lists rights retained by the author and the author’s home institution
The Scholarly Communication Toolkit is a useful place to learn key issues & strategies for change in the realm of scholarly publishing. Review for ideas on how you can manage you copyrights, including links to model copyright and publishing agreements.
