E-mail for Life
Why E-mail for Life?
Wouldn't it be great if you could have one e-mail address for the rest of your life? One permanent address you could use forever and never worry about having to change it...
What IS E-mail for Life?
WPI offers a lifelong e-mail forwarding service exclusively for alumni, with an e-mail address like "YourName@alum.wpi.edu" created for you.
This e-mail address can be "linked" to whatever other e-mail address you want at hotmail, yahoo, or maybe your work address. It will forward all e-mails sent to it on to the other e-mail address.
Whenever your ISP changes, all you need to do is change your e-mail address with WPI and your e-mail will follow you to your new address. No more updating friends, family, or Web sites on your ever-changing e-mail address just update it in one place and you're all set!
How Can I Get E-mail for Life?
To get started, you must first have access to the Alumni Information Gateway. If you have an Alumni ID and password, you can log in and set up your e-mail address now!
If you do not have an Alumni ID and password, request one now!
Now Available: Virus and Spam Filtering
Tired of opening your e-mail to hundreds of spam messages and annoying virus-laden attachments? By having your e-mail sent to an alum.wpi.edu address, you can avoid the hassle.
Many, but not all, viruses are automatically removed by the alum.wpi.edu e-mail system. This is done primarily through the removal of all executable and some types of encoded file attachments (examples include .exe, .com, .hqx, and .uu, to name just a few). The alumni e-mail systems are monitored and updated as new viruses arise by WPI's Computing and Communications Center staff in short, you get the same benefit from their efforts as WPI students, faculty, and staff.
Spam messages are marked by a special program in such a way that you can configure your e-mail reader (Outlook, Eudora, etc.) to automatically delete or set aside messages that are, most likely, spam. It's not 100% effective at catching all spam, but the amount of spam is greatly reduced by this system. A new feature allows for you to control the different levels of spam that get filtered out by setting up lists of e-mail addresses that should be let through the filter, as well as those that should be thrown out.
Even if you already have virus and/or spam filtering from your local ISP or on your computer, it never hurts to add another layer of protection!
