Scholars of Note

Medwin Chamber Music Scholarships were recently awarded to senior Tara Devarakonda, sophomore Erin Hokanson, and freshmen Lynn Hull and Katherine Wheeler. Devarakonda is a violinist, Hokanson plays the viola, and Hull and Wheeler are cellists. All are members of the Medwin String Ensemble.

Herman Medwin, CEO of Ocean Acoustics Associates in Pebble Beach, Calif., and a renowned expert in acoustical oceanography, graduated from WPI in 1941 with a bachelor's degree in physics. During his college years, he enjoyed being part of a string ensemble his fellow students organized for their extracurricular enjoyment. In 1987, he created an endowment to support the Medwin String Ensemble; two years later he established the Medwin Chamber Music Scholarships.

"I have been pleased to observe the growth of the String Ensemble in quantity and quality since 1987," says Douglas Weeks, admisitrator of applied music. "We are deeply indebted to Hank Medwin for his support of this program."
