ME welcomes new department head

Gretar Tryggvason, a native of Reykjavik, Iceland, is the new head of the Mechanical Engineering Department.

He replaces Mohammad N. Noori, who accepted the post of professor and head of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at North Carolina State University.

Tryggvason holds a B.S. from the University of Iceland and an Sc.M. and Ph.D. from Brown University; he completed postdoctoral studies at New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. In 1999-2000 he was a visiting scientist at the University of Paris VI in France. Previously he was a mechanical engineering professor, director of undergraduate studies and associate chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mathematics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Tryggvason's awards include a Fulbright grant, a National Science Foundation Engineering Initiation Award, and the 2000 University of Michigan's College Excellence in Service Award. He is a former associate editor of the Journal of Computational Physics. His research interests include multiphase- and free-surface flows, vortex flows and combustion, phase changes, solidification and numerical methods.
