This project was part of an Environmental Design Contest. The task was to design a full-scale, low maintenance, low footprint, energy efficient, and reliable pretreatment system for reverse osmosis membranes used for seawater desalination on ships. Alternative technologies were tested at the bench-scale. Turbidity and organic carbon, as measures of fouling potential, were the main parameters for evaluating pretreatment effectiveness. A dual media filter followed by a cartridge filter provided the best treatment and the lowest cost.
