Manufacturing Engineering

Where Engineering Meets Process—for Results

WPI’s Manufacturing Engineering (MFE) program is focused on creating operating techniques for the production of engineering designs, to bring ideas into practical, cost-effective use. As one of nine possible paths of study approached through the Mechanical Engineering department, MFE allows students to work with faculty who are leaders in fields like robotics, materials processing, artificial intelligence, fixturing, controls, machining, grinding, teaching CNC machining, and surface metrology—or to maintain a broader, multidisciplinary, cutting-edge approach. The department is also currently developing an emphasis on clean manufacturing to address environmental issues in industrial processes.

One of the first schools to offer MS and PhD degrees in manufacturing engineering, WPI brings a tradition of knowledge and practice to this far-ranging field. Students benefit from the expertise of faculty who can guide them toward local and global project work that will prepare them for rewarding careers in a variety of industries.
