Abstract: Computational models have been developed to simulate the surface treatment of steel. Our focus has been on the development and verification of models that can be used to predict the results of the surface heat treatment processes, and develop more effective and efficient processes. These models can also be used to optimize the processes. In this paper the general models will be developed and discussed with emphasis on boundary condition identification, selection, and determination. The database needs will be identified. The importance of thermodynamic as well as kinetic models will be emphasized. Several models will be demonstrated including CARBTOOL, CARBONITRIDETOOL, and the initial version of NITRIDETOOL including alloy-specific Leher diagrams.
