Social Science & Policy Studies
All scientific and technological problems are embedded in broader sociocultural contexts.
The biggest challenges facing the world are not just technical problems. Climate change, inequality, artificial intelligence, public health, sustainable development, and technological change all involve people, institutions, communities, and difficult choices about the future.
To change the world, you have to understand how it works.
WPI’s Social Science & Policy Studies (SSPS) department gives students the tools to understand the human side of the world’s biggest challenges. Our students study human behavior and cognition, environmental change, sustainable development, policy, economics, and complex systems—and learn how these forces shape the technologies and innovations transforming society. You will also learn how technology is no longer another field of study, it is the environment within which every discipline operates.
Human centered innovation and real world impact.
At WPI, you don’t have to choose between understanding technology and understanding people. You can do both. Through faculty-led research and hands-on projects, SSPS students investigate real problems, work with communities and organizations, and explore how better decisions and designs can lead to better outcomes.
Study human sciences, policy, sustainability, innovation and design where it happens.
Many students combine an SSPS major with engineering, computing, science, or another technical field, creating a distinctive education that connects what we can build with what we should build—and who it should serve. SSPS minors offer another way to bring this perspective to virtually any WPI major.
Understanding technology in society develops your judgment to shape change for the better.

2026 Undergraduate Research Projects Showcase
The 2026 Undergraduate Research Project Showcase was a celebration of research, design, and creative theses—a requirement of every graduating senior through the Major Qualifying Project (MQP)—takes place each spring on campus. Student teams representing all academic departments present their work to their faculty advisors, external sponsors, and the community-at-large, and the public is invited. The chemistry and biochemistry department had extraordinary projects with thorough research from each participating student, as well as two exemplary MQP students who were awarded the Major Qualifying Project Awards. You can see all award winners in this spotlight!
