Abstract: This will be a basic talk aimed at preparing the audience for Friday’s Conant Prize Lecture by Dr. Jennifer Hom from Georgia Tech. I read her wonderful prize-winning paper (PDF linked below) and will give an elementary introduction to balls, spheres, knots and links to help us get the most out of Friday’s talk. No topological background will be assumed.
