Weekly Athletic Update (11/25-12/01)

For the first time under 10-year head coach Chris Robertson, WPI had a pair of football player selected to the prestigious New England Football Writers College Division All‐New England Team.  Running back Sean McAllen earned the honor for the second time while center Vince Lucca was named for the first time. 

The NEWMAC has announced the Fall 2019 All-Sportsmanship team.  Seniors Jill ComeauJivan PurutyanAbbie Gilbert, Hannah Larochelle and Steve Mey have been named to their respective NEWMAC All-Sportsmanship teamsLogan Gaudette and rookie Lora Dufresne were also honored.  

WPI placed 79 fall student-athletes on their respective NEWMAC Academic All-Conference teams. Football led the way with 21 selections while Women's Soccer boasted 15 and Men's Soccer placed ten. Volleyball had seven honorees while Field Hockey had eight. Women's Cross Country broke its program record by placing ten and Men's Cross Country saw eight earn accolades. 

Amanda Wetmore and Catherine Reynolds were selected to the New England Women’s Volleyball Association (NEWVA) All-New England and All-Rookie teams while Abbie Gilbert and Colleen Mullins were chosen to participate in the association’s Senior Classic All-Star Event scheduled for Sunday, December 8th at Eastern Nazarene.  

Midfielder Kristen McCrea and goalkeeper Mandy St. Germain have been chosen to play in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) Senior Bowl, which is scheduled for a noon kickoff on Saturday, December 7th at Merrimack College. 

Jackson ConroyBen RicksonLuke Reiniger and Mark Calnan were all selected to participate in the New England Intercollegiate Soccer League (NEISL) Senior All-Star Game.  The game, which was slated for Sunday, December 1st at Brandeis, was cancelled due to the impending snowstorm.  

Victoria Mirecki erupted for a career-high 17 points and Women’s Basketball’s defense limited host Nichols to 18.1% shooting from the floor as the Engineers bested the Bison 63-36 in a non-conference contest played Tuesday evening.  With the result, WPI ups its record to 5-2 overall. After Nichols connected on two of their first three shots to go up 5-2, the Engineers rattled off the next 17 points to surge ahead 19-5 and would never see its advantage shrink below double digits. 

Garrett Stephenson posted his second double-double of the season and was joined in double figures in scoring by Reid Walker (15) and Colin McNamara (12) as nationally-ranked Men’s Basketball went on the road and defeated Worcester State 68-47 Tuesday evening in non-conference action at John P. Brissette Court. The Engineers, ranked 25th in the most recent D3hoops.com Top 25 improved to 7-1 on the season after an 89-74 victory over Fitchburg State on Saturday.  Walker flirted with a triple-double with 21 points, 12 boards and 8 assists while Stephenson added 17 points and 7 rebounds. 

Swimming and Diving will host the seventh annual Gompei Invitational with day and evening sessions on Friday, December 6th, Saturday, December 7th, and Sunday December 8th.  Both basketball teams have home contests this week against Tufts.  Men’s Basketball hosts the Jumbos on Tuesday at 7pm while Women’s Basketball takes on Tufts on Saturday at 2pm.  Also this week, Wresting heads to Rochester for the RIT Invitational on Saturday.

Men’s Student-Athlete of the Week 

Garrett Stephenson - Basketball - Junior - Townsend, MA

Garrett Stephenson from the basketball team has been selected as the WPI Male Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, December 1st.  A week after being named the MVP of the Paula Titus Memorial Tournament hosted by UMass Boston, Stephenson continued his strong start to the 2019-2020 campaign.  The junior posted his second double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds as the nationally-ranked Engineers went on the road and defeated Worcester State 68-47 on Tuesday.  Stephenson added 17 points and seven boards Saturday as No. 25 WPI bested visiting Fitchburg State 89-74.  For the week, the center averaged 17.5 points and 9.0 rebounds while shooting 65.4% from the floor.

Women’s Student-Athlete of the Week

Victoria Mirecki - Women’s Basketball - Sophomore - Rock Tavern, NY

Victoria Mirecki of the basketball team has been honored as the WPI Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, December 1st. Mirecki exploded for a career-best 17 points as the Engineers overwhelmed Nichols 63-36 on Tuesday evening.  The second and third quarters were Mirecki's to shine.  The sophomore more than tripled her season scoring total in the middle 20 minutes, shooting a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers and a conventional 3-point play.
