Title: Quantum surface codes

Abstract: This talk will be a continuation of last week’s seminar on quantum stabilizer codes. Our focus will be on surface codes, their performance and parameters. These were introduced by Alexei Kitaev in 1997 and have become a dominant choice for quantum error correction and fault-tolerant quantum computing. For example, Google made international headlines in 2024 by successfully implementing a 49-qubit (toroidal) surface code on its 105-qubit Willow machine.
