Minor in American Studies
Are you interested in exploring the cultures and politics of the United States? Whether you’d like to strengthen your area knowledge for a career in the U.S. or simply follow your curiosity through the study of American history, culture, and national identity, WPI’s interdisciplinary American Studies minor offers opportunities beyond the HUA requirement to explore past and present meanings of “America” and “Americans.”
Any student at WPI is eligible to pursue the Minor in American Studies except for students majoring in Humanities and Arts with a concentration in American Studies.
Curriculum
To earn a minor in American Studies, you’ll complete two units of work, including:
- At least 2 courses in American history (HI)*
- At least 2 courses in American literature (EN)*
Electives include courses drawn from American art/architecture (AR), American music (MU), American philosophy and religion (PY/RE), or additional American HI or EN, or the distinctive American Studies Fall Seminar at the American Antiquarian Society.
American Antiquarian Society Fall Seminar
This competitive seminar, open to a limited number of Worcester college students, features a different visiting professor and a new thematic focus each fall. The seminar is equivalent to two courses in American Studies at the 3000-level; the comparable WPI discipline(s) will be determined by the topic of each seminar. To apply, consult a member of the American Studies faculty early in the preceding D-term.
At least two courses must be at the 3000 level, and no more than one course at the 1000 level may be applied toward the minor.
*HU 1411 (Introduction to American Studies) may be substituted for either an EN or a HI course
Application Process
Before applying, discuss your interest with any WPI faculty member who teaches American art or architectural history, literature, history, music, or philosophy.
You will need to designate a minor advisor from this group and complete an American Studies minor application form. The application form is available in the HUA office.
