Book by John Sanbonmatsu Receives Independent Publisher Book Award
A book authored by John Sanbonmatsu, professor of philosophy in the Department of Humanities and Arts, has been awarded a gold medal in the Independent Publisher Book Awards’ (IPPYs) 2026 competition.
The Omnivore’s Deception: What We Get Wrong about Meat, Animals, and Ourselves (New York University Press) won the top prize in the category of environment/ecology. The book, Sanbonmatsu’s third, focuses on injustices against other animals. It offers a wide-ranging critique of the devastating ecological, social, and moral consequences of the animal food system, with special emphasis on the myth of “humane” and “sustainable” animal products.
“I am honored that my book on animal justice has been recognized with this medal,” Sanbonmatsu said. “Fewer and fewer publishers these days are willing to back works that take big swings at controversial issues. I am therefore grateful to my publisher, New York University Press, for its courage in publishing a book that challenges our conventional understandings of animals and nature.”
