The Boston chapter of ASHRAE held a meeting and student appreciation night Nov. 18, 2025, at WPI. The event featured a speech by Mick Schwedler, ASHRAE fellow and society former president, and recognition of WPI students who participated in a design competition sponsored by ASHRAE.

ASHRAE is an international society of heating, refrigerating, and air-conditioning professionals.  Founded in 1894, ASHRAE is dedicated to advancing human well-being through sustainable technology for the built environment. The society and its members focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration, and sustainability within the industry.

More than 50 professionals participated in the event at WPI and interacted with undergraduate and graduate students. The Boston chapter recognized Ryan Hsu ’25 and Sofia Quattrini ’26, who were part of teams that finished first and second, respectively, in a spring 2025 design competition at WPI that was organized by Kedar Shete, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering.

The competition involved designing and simulating a cooling system for Unity Hall. Using a year of HVAC system cooling-load data for the classroom and research building, the students developed low global-warming potential cooling solutions with improved energy efficiency. Fourteen teams participated.
