Karen Troy, the John Woodman Higgins Professor and head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, has been elected to the World Council of Biomechanics, one of the field’s most prestigious international governing bodies.

Troy was elected through a competitive process for council membership. The 40-member council includes 20 elected members who are leaders in the field, representing the disciplinary breadth of biomechanics around the world. Troy will serve a 12-year term on the council.

A faculty member at Worcester Polytechnic Institute since 2013, Troy is widely recognized for her innovative research, which integrates medical imaging, computational modeling, and movement analysis to better understand how mechanical forces shape bone health and injury risk. Her work has advanced fracture prevention and musculoskeletal care for diverse populations, including athletes, older adults, and individuals with spinal cord injuries.

Troy is a fellow of the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS), the American Society of Biomechanics (ASB), and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. She has received multiple national awards for outstanding and sustained commitment to mentorship, impactful musculoskeletal research, and leadership in orthopaedics and musculoskeletal science and engineering, including the ORS Adele L. Boskey Award (2023) and the ASB Founder’s Award (2021).

The World Council of Biomechanics serves as a worldwide forum to exchange information across all aspects of modern biomechanics and oversees the World Congress of Biomechanics, a global gathering held every four years. The newly elected council members will be formally welcomed at the general assembly on the opening day of the 10th World Congress of Biomechanics this summer in Vancouver, Canada.
