Sustainable Futures: Predictions in Practice

Predicting building energy use is complex, but what about the trajectory of the entire building sector? And how are design professions evolving as we face the year 2030 and by most models expected to far exceed global emissions targets? What tools, strategies, and processes are becoming part of everyday practice to strive against such a certain future? Part observation and part call to action, this talk will explore the expanding role of designers as analysts, ecologists, chemists, waste managers, and witnesses to this changing planet.

Mickey Chapa AIA, LEED AP, LFA, CPHC is a member of PAYETTE’s Building Science Group, bringing 10+ years’ experience as an architect to the role. Mickey is currently leveraging his expertise to explore comprehensive carbon reductions through energy modeling, life cycle assessment, material health, and the circular economy at scale. He co-chairs a circular economy research group at PAYETTE, participates in Carbon Leadership Forum (CLF) New England’s Reuse Subcommittee, and is currently appointed to AIA National’s 2030 Commitment Working Group.
