Rethinking Bioclimatic Architecture: Re-Connecting People, Buildings, Climates, and Locales

Bioclimatic Design is grounded in the classic, mid-20th century practices that emphasize the “passive” properties of the building envelope, of the ability of the walls, windows, and thermal mass of the building to modulate the interior climate. By rethinking those practices, we extend those practices by adapting smarter technologies, which leverage more environmental resources to make buildings comfortable, healthy, and energy efficient.

William W. Braham, PhD, FAIA is the Andrew Gordon Professor of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania where he is Director of the programs in Environmental Building Design and of the Center for Environmental Building + Design. He has worked on energy and architecture for over 40 years as a designer, consultant, researcher, and author of numerous articles and books.

His latest book is Architecture and Systems Ecology: Thermodynamic Principles for Environmental Building Design, in three parts (2015) and he also co-edited Energy Accounts: Architectural Representations of Energy, Climate, and the Future (2016). His most recent projects include carbon plans for City of Philadelphia and The
University of Pennsylvania Health System and building performance modelling for 
Daikin Open Innovation Lab, Silicon Valley.
