Current Frontiers and Challenges in Fault Injection Attacks
Abstract:
Since the late 1990s fault injection attacks (FIA) has established itself as one of the most critical physical threat vectors against cryptographic implementations. While the basic theory behind FA is well-understood, modern System-on-Chip (SoC) architectures and complex hardware-software stacks present unprecedented challenges for system designers and evaluators.
This seminar talk provides an overview of the landscape of fault injection attacks, bridging the gap between the theoretical capturing of fault events and its real-world execution. We will explore how physical perturbation techniques - such as clock/voltage glitching, EMFI, and laser fault injection - are modeled, executed, and integrated into early-stage security evaluation workflows. Finally, we discuss persistent open problems in securing next-generation complex systems against advanced injection attacks.

Bio:
Tim Güneysu is a professor and head of the Chair for Security Engineering at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany, and co-speaker of the Horst-Görtz Institute for IT Security. He is also affiliated with the Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) division of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Bremen. In addition, he serves as a principal investigator of CASA – Cyber Security in the Age of Large-Scale Adversaries, the only Cluster of Excellence in Germany dedicated to IT security.
His research interests cover the secure design and low-level engineering of computing systems, with a particular focus on advanced and quantum-resistant cryptographic implementations, processor and microarchitectural security, and hardware-based system protection. He has co-authored more than 190 peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals and conferences on applied security and cryptography.
