 Dr. Juan Cuevas, FM, will discuss fire risks associated with lithium-ion battery systems, including the basics of thermal runaway in these batteries and current strategies for mitigating fire hazards in their applications.

Juan is a postdoctoral researcher in the Fire Hazards and Protection Area at FM, where he is currently working on assessing the flammability and fire hazards associated with lithium-ion battery systems. He earned his PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Queensland. Previously, he served as a postdoctoral research fellow at WPI, focusing on wildland fire protection, and worked as a fire protection engineer in Chile.
