WPI Attains Designation as an R1 Research University

Multiple media outlets reported on WPI's designation as an R1 institution. The classification from the American Council on Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching identifies WPI as a top-tier research institution based on research spending and the number of doctoral degrees awarded annually. Coverage included articles in Forbes, The Boston Globe, MassLive, University Business, Worcester Business Journal, and The Worcester Guardian.

The goal of the plan is to make the city more energy sustainable and climate resilient. “A sustainable society really needs to be resilient, in that it can make an efficient recovery from the impact of various weather events,” Mathisen told the magazine.
