Nancy Burnham is a physicist who specializes in understanding materials at the nanoscale, which is far smaller than what the eye can see. She uses advanced tools such as atomic force microscopy to study the surfaces and mechanical properties of a wide range of materials, from semiconductor devices to tissue-growth substrates, and from solar cells to asphalt binders. She can speak about imaging of nanomaterials and the applications of nanomaterials in emerging technologies. Burnham can also help explain the physics behind the sports we watch. For example: why there are different preferred temperatures for ice used as surfaces for different Olympic sports, or why the grip strength of pairs figure skaters rivals that of power lifters.
