Boston 25 News reported on WPI biology professor Pamela Weathers being part of a team of researchers finding that extracts from leaves of the medicinal herb known as sweet wormwood inhibit the replication of COVID-19 and two of its variants. (7:36:31 mark)

Boston 25 (Fox) News interviewed Shichao Liu, assistant professor, Civil & Environmental Engineering, (18:24:31 mark) for a report on energy saving homes. “If you think about energy consumption reduction in the future to save the planet, then we have to look at the consumption by buildings. Using passive house standards, we can significantly reduce energy consumption by buildings.”

WPI mechanical engineering professor Adam Powell appeared in a 3-minute segment on Boston 25 News discussing approaches to reducing corrosion in cars. Powell, who was awarded a three-year, $1.5 million grant from the Department of Energy, noted that WPI “…will be creating advanced lightweight components that can last as long as the rest of conventional cars.” (References to WPI start at 1:56.)

Suzanne LePage, instructor, civil and environmental engineering, was interviewed by Boston 25 as part of a segment on Boston traffic congestion and a Baker Administration proposal to give tax credits to employers letting employees telecommute. “If we’re going to just try to work within the capacity that we have that, to me, seems like a logical solution,” she said of the Baker proposal.

Boston 25 News interviewed Professor Milosh Puchovsky, fire protection engineering, was interviewed about potential fire hazards associated with solar panels on homes. “Just having the panel on the roof would change the risk because you are introducing an electrical current where one was not previously,” he told the station, adding that rooftop solar panels can be safe and effective if properly installed and regularly maintained after installation.  

Boston 25 reported on WPI researchers developing a sensor the size of a Band-Aid to measure a baby’s blood oxygen levels, a vital indication of the lungs’ effectiveness and whether the baby’s tissue is receiving adequate oxygen supply. This wearable device will be flexible and stretchable, wireless, inexpensive, and mobile - possibly allowing the child to leave the hospital and be monitored remotely.

Boston 25 reported that WPI is getting an $8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to scale up ASSISTments, a middle-school math assessment tool. ASSISTments was created by Neil Heffernan, the William Smith Dean Professor of Computer Science and the director of the Learning Sciences and Technologies Program at WPI, and his wife, Cristina Heffernan.
