It is my pleasure to announce that Dr. Kyumin Lee has been appointed program director of WPI’s Data Science and Artificial Intelligence programs for a one-year term, from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027. He will serve in this role while Dr. Elke Rundensteiner takes a one-year sabbatical.

Dr. Lee is a Computer Science professor affiliated with WPI’s Data Science and Artificial Intelligence programs. He earned his B.S. from Kyonggi University, his M.S. from Sungkyunkwan University, and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Texas A&M University. He joined WPI in 2017 and has contributed actively to both the Data Science and Computer Science communities.

Dr. Lee’s research brings together artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, information retrieval, and social computing. His recent scholarship includes work on the safety and trustworthiness of large language models, recommender systems, graph-based learning, misinformation and online harms, and the use of AI to help detect and disrupt wildlife trafficking. His work demonstrates a sustained commitment to advancing AI and data science while applying these methods to consequential real-world challenges.

Dr. Lee brings deep scholarly expertise and a strong record of engagement with the academic areas at the heart of these programs. I am grateful to him for taking on this important leadership role and look forward to his leadership in the year ahead.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Lee on his appointment and in thanking Dr. Rundensteiner for her leadership and service to the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence programs.

Best Regards,
