Brittany Bolster was one of three Engineers to bat 2-for-3 in game one and Renee LeClaire went 3-for-3 with a double in game two as WPI topped Wheaton, 6-3 and 9-4, Saturday in a NEWMAC Softball doubleheader on Rooftop Field.  The Engineers are now 15-5 on the season, 5-1 against NEWMAC teams and tied with MIT atop the leaderboard.  The sweep capped a huge week as WPI split a doubleheader Wednesday with No.12 Amherst and swept a twinbill Friday against defending NEWMAC regular season champion Springfield. Pitcher Kelsey Saucier collected a win in all three doubleheaders.

Baseball accumulated 33 runs on 43 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Emerson that included a combined 31 runs and 37 hits in the second game Saturday at the New England Baseball Complex. The Engineers took the first game 12-2 and the second 21-10. The Boynton Hillers' 22 hits in game two ties for the most since March 6, 2017 versus Muskingum (OH) and the 21 runs is the most since game one versus Coast Guard on April 15, 2017.  On Thursday Benjamin Chaffee ended the game with a three-run shot to left to lift WPI to a 6-4, 11-inning victory over visiting Fitchburg State.

Alex Rus, Ben Steeves and Jack DeVine earned gold as the Men’s Track & Field team placed second in the outdoor season opener Saturday at the Tufts Snowflake Classic.  Rus needed only 49.79 to take the 400-meter dash while Steeves broke the tape with a NEWMAC-leading 1:56.27 in the 800-meter run and DeVine achieved a distance of 22-6.25 to win the long jump. Elizabeth Kirschner and Kendra O’Malley earned silver in the triple jump and hammer throw, respectively, as Women’s Track & Field tied for fourth place. Kirschner leaped just over 35 feet (35-1) and O’Malley sent the hammer 146-3.

Led by seniors Sabrina Guzzi and Izzy Garver, 12 WPI student-athletes were recognized for academics by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). The team, meanwhile, was honored for the 13th consecutive year. The duo earned their fourth NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad selection while Guzzi was also named as a repeat Scholar of Distinction.

Men’s and Women’s Rowing kicks off the spring portion of their schedules this weekend by hosting Regattas on both Saturday and Sunday morning.   Saturday features the Class of 2003 Cup for the men and the Jennifer McLaughlin Cup for the women.  Also at home this week is Softball on Wednesday for a 3:30pm makeup doubleheader against Westfield State and Baseball on Friday for a 3:30pm NEWMAC contest versus Clark at the New England Baseball Complex in Northboro.  Also next weekend, Track and Field heads to Western Mass for the Amherst Spring Fling Invitational.
