2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
AE Dept & WoAA Graduate Colloquium;
"Ready to Launch? Pathways to Space Exploration" Presented by Kerri Cahoy Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics, MIT
In order to even get to orbit, a “village” of different skills are needed: aerospace, electrical, mechanical, software, and
systems engineers, as well as program managers, financial officers, and communications specialists. I will talk about why
space exploration is important, my background, and how I developed several of these skills along my career path through
academia, industry, government research, and back to academia. I will also talk about how spacecraft and rockets are
developed, and some of the exciting new directions in Earth observation and communications as well as planetary
exploration and astrophysics.
