Group Exams: Benefits for Minimizing Stress, Promoting Learning & Preventing Faculty Burnout (Food for Thought)

Wednesday, March 29, 12 pm - 1:30 pm, Rubin Campus Center, Hagglund Room – Lunch Provided

Presenters: Angela Incollingo Rodriguez, Assistant Professor of Psychological & Cognitive Sciences; Paul Pacheco, LS&T Graduate Student & Psychological Science Alumnus; Lali Berelashvili, Senior, Biochemistry & Psychological Science Major; Gillian Ebeling, Senior, BME

Abstract: It’s no secret that our students are stressed and that stress undermines learning. This presentation will discuss how to use group exams to reduce student stress, promote learning, and – as an added bonus – mitigate faculty burnout. Professor Angela Incollingo Rodriguez will cover her experience designing and implementing group exam methodologies over the past several years, including the guiding rationale for group exams, various iterations of this format, and the multipronged benefits to students and faculty. Then, a multidisciplinary panel of students will share their perspective having taken different versions of group exams and/or having served as PLAs for courses using this format. Finally, we will conclude with a Q&A portion so attendees can explore how they might integrate this method into their own courses.

People who need to leave early for 1pm commitments are still welcome to attend. Lunch will be provided for all those who register at least 3 business days in advance
