Workshop on Broader Impacts for your career and NSF CAREER

Tuesday, April 25, 2023
2:30 pm to 4:00 pm
Floor/Room #
Hagglund Conference Room

Facilitated by the Director of the STEM Education Center, Kathy Chen, this in-person, working session is designed to help participants investigate the different ways one can make an impact on society through their career that aligns with their values and goals, as well as help with NSF grants that require a Broader Impacts plan. We will start with one’s “Impact Identity,” and use it to guide the session.

While we will review examples of the NSF priority areas, you are encouraged to bring your own ideas about the broader impacts you wish to have. We will be going through the steps of the ARIS Toolkit for you to sketch out a Broader Impacts plan, and thus bringing a laptop to work on and store ideas is suggested.

The workshop will include time to work on the following questions and to get feedback on:

  • Who is my audience?
  • Who will I work with?
  • How and where will I work with them?
  • What effective practices support my proposed approach?
  • How will I know if I have been successful/effective?
  • And how much will all this cost?
