Abstract: Eric Guo and Corey Alfieri will discuss their experience working with WPI students on data science GQPs and giving some thoughts on starting a career in Data Science. They will discuss the projects they have worked with WPI students on, some of the skills and techniques used, and discuss what Hanover is looking for when working on these types of projects. They will offer some additional pointers on the things they look for when recruiting new-in-career data scientists and interns as well as some tips for getting started in the industry.
Bios
- Eric Guo – Senior Data Scientist - The Hanover Insurance Group | Eric started his career as a data analyst at Amrock after graduating from University of Michigan where he received Master of Science in Actuarial Mathematics in 2013. He then worked at Latcha + Associates for more than 5 years where he gained the exposures to various aspects of customer relationship management. Eric joined PL Data Science team at Hanover in 2020. Currently, he has been dedicating himself to agency experience and customer retention.
- Corey Alfieri – Director, Personal Lines Data Science – The Hanover Insurance Group | Corey is a Director of Personal Lines Data Science at Hanover Insurance. He started his career with Hanover 12 years ago after graduating WPI with a Bachelors Degree in Actuarial Mathematics in 2012. He worked at Hanover as a commercial lines actuary for three years before rotating to their data science team where he has been working since. After several years focusing on building analytics and models for customer quoting behaviors and home replacement values, he began leading a team of data scientists through a wide swath of modelling and analytic problems. He led The Hanover’s data science internship program for two years and has been involved with coordinating several WPI MQPs and GQPs.
