Worcester Technical High School Selected to Assist WPI Solar Decathlon Team

Tech Students Will Help Build Modular Solar Home for 2013 Competition in China

What

Worcester Technical High School has been selected by Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) to have students assist in the Solar Decathlon competition co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the China National Energy Administration, a highly competitive and award-winning program that challenges university teams to design, build and operate net-zero energy houses powered by the sun. Students at Worcester Technical High School will assist students and faculty at WPI with construction of the modular, 1,600-square-foot house, which will be entered in the competition next year in China.

The announcement comes as Worcester Tech celebrates its selection by NBC's Education Nation as a high-achievement school. Last month Education Nation cited the school's successes, including a 96 percent graduation rate, with 77 percent going on to college. Worcester Tech, with 1,400 students in 24 technical programs, is the largest high school in the city of Worcester.

Who

U.S. Rep. James P. McGovern, D-Worcester, will congratulate the school for its achievements.

Professor Steven Van Dessel of Ghent University will outline the Solar Decathlon project and the Worcester Tech students' role in the project. WPI Provost Eric Overstrom is also scheduled to speak at the event.

WPI is one of 23 International teams to participate in the Solar Decathlon competition next year in China. WPI is part of an international, multi-university team with members from Ghent University in Belgium and New York University Polytechnic Institute. This is a highly competitive and award-winning program that challenges university teams to design, build and showcase net-zero energy houses powered by the sun. Over the course of the 2012-2013 academic year, WPI students will work on the project and learn more about energy efficient and sustainable construction methods.
