Transition to College
Wondering how to get involved with activities at WPI, what courses to take in the spring, or how to handle a conflict with a roommate? You’ll find out the answers to these questions and more through your Insight Team, a group of students and advisors dedicated to assisting you with your transition to college, both personally and academically, and helping you make the most out of your first year at WPI.
The First-Year Insight Program
You will meet your Insight Team during New Student Orientation and will be part of the team throughout your first two terms at WPI. Your team will include other students and two key mentoring advisors.
You’ll meet regularly with advisors and get together with your team to socialize and participate in fun and educational programs. You’ll also make lifelong friendships through this program and form valuable mentoring relationships with upperclassmen, faculty, and staff.

What is a Community Advisor?
A student who plans and leads social events and educational programs for your Insight group. They are sometimes referred to as "CA's"

A faculty or staff member who regularly meets with your group in a relaxed setting to offer academic guidance.
Insight Opportunities Available for Incoming Students
Business Connections
The Business Connections iTeam is designed for students interested in exploring business, entrepreneurship, leadership, innovation, and related fields at WPI. Whether you plan to major or minor in business, are considering adding it to your academic journey, or simply want to connect with others who share similar interests, this group provides an opportunity to build community, explore campus resources, and learn more about academic and career pathways within the business space. No prior experience needed, all you need is an interest in learning, connecting, and exploring opportunities.
First-Generation Connections
The First-Generation Connections iTeam is designed to support students who identify as first-generation college students, meaning their parent(s) or legal guardian(s) did not complete a four-year college or university degree in the United States. This group provides an opportunity to build community, connect with peers who may share similar experiences, and explore the many academic, social, and campus resources available at WPI. Through conversation, mentorship, and shared experiences, students will gain support as they navigate their transition to college and develop confidence in their journey at WPI.
Interpersonal Meets Intercultural: Let's Human Together!
Students in this iTeam will be introduced to essential interpersonal and intercultural communication skills needed for success in diverse academic, professional, and social environments. Students will learn how culture influences communication styles, relationships, and perspectives while developing skills in active listening, empathy, collaboration, conflict resolution, and respectful dialogue. Through discussions, case studies, and interactive activities, the course helps students build confidence in communicating effectively across cultural differences and working successfully with people from varied backgrounds.
Lavender Community
This iTeam is available for any students who share an interest in setting community norms together, hosting educational and social events, and building community through learning from and living with people with an interest in LGBTQIAP+ community and culture. Students will be encouraged to participate in periodic community programming and dialogues intended to build community, promote learning, and support wellness.
Pre-Health Professions
For students interested in careers in healthcare or health-related fields, including medicine, veterinary medicine, public health, physician assistant studies, and more.
Thrive & Arrive: The Grounded First-Year Experience
Thrive & Arrive helps you start college feeling grounded and connected. Using the Mindfulness Institute of Emerging Adulthood (MIEA) curriculum, you’ll learn simple mindfulness practices to manage stress and stay focused—while regular check-ins help you get to know others and build a sense of community.
Umoja Community
This iTeam is available for any students who share an interest in setting community norms together, hosting educational and social events, and building community through learning from and living with people with an interest in Black and African American cultures. Students, representing a variety of identities and backgrounds, pride themselves on fostering a sense of belonging for all residents. Regular programmatic events and interactions allow students to deepen knowledge and understanding of themselves, peers, and the world.
Undecided Connections
Students don’t need to have everything figured out before coming to WPI and this Insight group is designed for exactly that. Undecided Connections provides students with a supportive community where they can explore academic interests, learn about majors and campus resources, and connect with peers who are also navigating their next steps. The General Insight Community is designed for students looking to build connections, explore campus resources, and successfully transition to life at WPI in a welcoming and supportive environment. Through conversations, mentorship, and shared experiences, students will connect with peers from a variety of backgrounds and interests while learning more about the opportunities, resources, and community available at WPI.

Each year we recognize outstanding students, advisors, and Insight Teams who have gone above and beyond to support and inspire first year students at WPI. If someone you know has made a great impression, consider nominating them for an award.
Shining Star Award
This award recognizes a first-year student who has shown leadership by becoming involved on campus activities throughout A- and B-Terms while also excelling academically.
Best Program Collaboration with Community and Resident Advisors
This award recognizes a Community Advisor and Resident Hall Advisor team who planned and executed an original program idea and fulfilled goals of the program while focusing on building community.
Best Insight Team
This award recognizes an Insight Team Group of a Community Advisor, Resident Advisor and Insight Advisor that worked the best together. Teams are nominated by the first-year students.
Insight Advisor Appreciation Award
This award recognizes the Insight Advisor whose floor had the best overall attendance and participation in Insight events.
