WPI students continue volunteering their time at Worcester Public Schools
Department(s):
STEM Education CenterThe YWCA of Central Massachusetts and Worcester Tech High School partnered with the WPI STEM Education Center to help recruit WPI students who are looking to volunteer their time on a regular basis to support and engage in Science, Math, and English Language Arts.
During the 24-25 Academic Year, WPI students volunteered their time to tutoring, mentoring, and facilitating enrichment activities for Worcester Public School students who attend the YWCA after-school programs at Clark Street Community School and Roosevelt Elementary School in Worcester. WPI students also volunteered their time at Worcester Technical High School’s “Finishing Strong” program, an after-school program designed to assist high school seniors who are in need of academic support. WPI students demonstrated their commitment to the community by volunteering for at least one term, creating authentic connections with the students. They dedicated one to two days, 2-4 hours a week.
Students who volunteered at Clark Street Elementary and Roosevelt Elementary:
- Aileen Cornwall-Brady, Sophomore, Chemical Engineering
- Grace Ho, Sophomore, Teacher Preparation Program (TPP) and Mathematics Science
- Keerthana Cheelamanthula, Graduate, Robotics Engineering
- Gabriella Krzywicki, Junior, Aerospace Engineering
- Caroline Walczak, Mass Academy

Through long-term volunteer commitments, WPI students develop authentic relationships within the community. For example, WPI student Grace Ho has volunteered at Roosevelt Elementary for two years, and her presence is eagerly awaited by the students. One student even asked if her mother could have Grace’s phone number so they could stay connected over the summer, highlighting the deep connections they have formed. Through these experiences, WPI students gain appreciation for being a part of the Worcester community.
