Design, Fabrication, and Testing of Multi-Material Soft Robots and Locomotion Mechanisms

Abstract: Soft robots enable safer interactions and adaptability in comparison to their rigid counterparts. However, the applications are limited to rudimentary and non-architected movements as the frail nature of soft matter hinders motion capabilities and diminishes structural integrity. On the contrary, classical mechanisms offer analytical synthesis and have been used for centuries. It is evident that the field of soft robotics can benefit from classical mechanism design, but the concept hasn’t been thoroughly induced yet. My work focuses on bridging the gap between classical mechanisms and soft robotics, introducing design and fabrication methodologies to imitate rigid mechanisms and use them in soft robotic systems.
