One of WPI’s great strengths lies in the many opportunities we provide for our faculty to interact across disciplinary, departmental, and school-wide boundaries to serve the University. These service activities are not merely checkboxes on the road to earning tenure and/or promotion. Rather, they are mechanisms by which we work with colleagues who we wouldn’t otherwise meet, develop a better understanding of the entire campus, and weave a faculty community with common interests despite our individual worlds. In this interactive session, we’ll talk about the benefits – both professional and personal – of devoting just a modest amount of time to active campus citizenry, in general, and to WPI’s ambitious faculty governance, in particular. We’ll discuss – with examples – institutional changes that we’ve made at WPI in the recent past that could only have been achieved by a strong faculty voice with broad faculty involvement. We’ll highlight issues on the near horizon that will be of special relevance to our newest faculty colleagues. And we’ll strategize how new faculty members can stay appropriately involved in both departmental and campus matters while remaining properly focused on our main missions of teaching and scholarship!
