Bengisu Tulu, Business School, Awarded in April 2023
The nearly $17 million National Institute of Mental Health-funded Center for Accelerating Practices to End Suicide through Technology Translation (CAPES) is led by UMass Chan and includes investigators from the WPI Business School faculty. Prof. Tulu is a co-Investigator under the Methods core and a co-lead for the Person-Centered Design Unit, which guides and promotes the utilization of user centered design approaches in CAPES projects. Prof. Johnson is a member of the Implementation Science Unit. Profs. Tulu, Johnson and Djamasbi are members of the Executive Committee of CAPES as well. In addition, Prof. Tulu is the co-lead of the exploratory project, Computerized Adaptive Tests (CATs), which applies complex calculations from large data sets to streamline primary care workflow integration to better identify and track mental health symptoms and suicide risk, and guide intervention delivery. This project also utilizes expertise of Profs. Johnson and Djamasbi and supports a new PhD student.

Bengisu Tulu, Business School, Awarded in May 2023
Prof. Tulu is a co-investigator in an NIH funded $256K STTR project that involves Q2i, a digital health startup successfully developed the Probation/Parole And Reentry Coach Application (PARCA) technology during a prior collaboration Prof. Tulu in another STTR project. PARCA platform enables justice involved people (JIP) to set and manage their personal goals while assisting them in addressing the social determinants of health (SDOH) in order to facilitate and supplement the substance use treatment process. During Phase I Parole and Probation Officers and their clients will utilize PARCA for short periods and provide improvement and feedback. With additional $1.6M that will be released during Phase 2, the research team will test the relative efficacy of supervision as usual (SAU) and PARCA with 60 probation/parole officers and 600 probationers/parolees. This project support a new PhD Student.
