SDG 3: Good Health & Well-Being - Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
I am a faculty member in the Integrative and Global Studies Department at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), where I teach social research methods and advise students on their Interactive Qualifying Projects (IQPs). My work centers on guiding students as they design and carry out field-based research, helping them to recognize the humanistic and social dimensions of science and technology. I have had the privilege of advising student projects in diverse locations such as Hawaii, Czechia, Albania, Romania, Greece, Switzerland, and Acadia National Park.
I discovered my path into academia somewhat indirectly—initially drawn by a deep love of learning and the vibrant intellectual environment of the university. After earning a B.A. in English from the University of Connecticut, I began my career in higher education administration, working in development at UConn, the Urban Institute, and the National Crime Prevention Council in Washington, D.C. These early roles in fundraising and project management ultimately led me to the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, where I served as a project management specialist and discovered that my true professional home was within the academic community.
Motivated by this realization, I pursued graduate study in sociology, earning my degree in 2000 from the University of New Hampshire. I then began what has become a fulfilling career in higher education, first teaching at community colleges and later at UConn and Clark University. During my 15 years at Clark, I taught sociology, advised undergraduates, and directed numerous honors theses, building a deep commitment to teaching, mentoring, and guiding students in their academic and intellectual growth.
I joined WPI in 2022 and was appointed the Project Center Director for Greece in 2024. In this role, I oversee all aspects of the program, including project development, sponsorships, budgeting, housing, and cultural immersion. I collaborate regularly with local nonprofit organizations in Greece who are addressing critical issues such as disability and accessibility, environmental education, social inclusion, and community empowerment.
Across all of my roles, my goal is to help students approach complex social issues with curiosity, perseverance, and a sense of wonder—preparing them to make thoughtful and lasting contributions in an increasingly interconnected world.
